PENANG
(Pulau Pinang) with its scenic landscape and special charm has attracted
artists for a long time, and also has drawn the attention of art lovers
form far and near to this tropical charming island. It is the cradle of
Malaysian art. As early as in the 18th century, the British painters had
created many water-colour and oil paintings to depict the idyllic views
of Penang. A group of pioneer local artists namely Abdullah Ariff,
Ibrahim Abu Bakar, Chuah Thean Teng, Khaw Sia, Kuo Ju Ping, Lee
Cheng Yong, Tay Hooi Keat and Yong Mun Sen started to gather together to
paint the scenery and life of the village folks. Their paintings have
become an integral part of Malaysian cultural heritage.
The artistic tradition of Penang is a continuing growth and development. The cohesive
characteristic of Penang art by 3 generations of Penang artists reflect
their love for art, life and culture.
